"What Do You Think?" - Promoting Student Collaboration using the Discussion Board
Abstract
Discussion Boards are collaborative tools, offering students the chance to read a full range of perspectives about a topic. Traditional classroom discussion is usually limited to a few students who are comfortable speaking in class. Online discussion is usually limited to a few students who are comfortable writing their thoughts. Discussion Boards promote a stronger class community by forcing students to utilize critical thinking skills and integrate research and class readings. This active method of learning fosters student empowerment supporting increased motivation, participation, and interest. Online Discussion Boards offer students a tool through which they can actively participate in the class and eases the fear of face to face classroom setting. Since Discussion Boards require reflection on a topic, they allow students to take their time presenting their perspectives. Discussion Boards are a non-threatening and reflective way to hear everyone's voice and opinion on a topic. This workshop will provide teaching strategies using the DB to (1) perform classroom clerical needs (such as using DB to post speech topics); (2) develop pre-class and/or post-class discussion preparation and (3) increase critical thinking and writing skills appropriate to course content.
